Oversight of Agency Services:

The Northern Authority assumes the crucial responsibility of overseeing the delivery of services to families by seven northern agencies. While the majority of services are directly provided by these agencies themselves, our role involves monitoring and ensuring the quality and effectiveness of these services.

Training to Agencies:

Recognizing the importance of continuous learning and professional development, the Northern Authority provides comprehensive training programs to agencies. Through these training initiatives, we equip agency staff with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to deliver high-quality services that meet the unique needs of First Nation children and families.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD):

One of our key objectives is to oversee the development of best practice standards for working with children affected by FASD. We recognize the challenges associated with FASD and strive to support affected individuals throughout their journey. This includes transition planning out of the Child and Family Services (CFS) system for those reaching the age of 18. Additionally, we conduct ongoing evaluations of FASD services and programs to ensure their effectiveness and make any necessary improvements.

Foster Care Recruitment:

Enhancing the availability and quality of foster care placements is a priority for us. To achieve this, we engage in various activities, including hosting information sessions for prospective foster parents across the province. We also collaborate with the Northern Alternative Care Network and work alongside agencies in the north to develop orientation materials for Northern Foster Care. Additionally, we provide foster parent training and develop a comprehensive Foster Parent Training Manual to support foster parents in their important role.

Foster Parent Appeals Committee:

The Northern Authority plays a vital role in foster parent appeals. We ensure a fair and impartial process for foster parents who wish to appeal decisions related to foster care. Our commitment to transparency and accountability encourages foster parents to utilize the appeal system when necessary.

At the Northern Authority, we are dedicated to the betterment of child and family services in Northern Manitoba. Through our oversight, training, support, and commitment to continuous improvement, we strive to create an environment where children receive the care and support they deserve, foster parents are well-prepared and supported, and best practices are upheld across the board.
